Tips for Windows laptop and PC users on how to recognize QR codes

Most users prefer to read QR codes using their smartphones and less frequently via tablets. This is because they only need to point the camera at the QR code image to instantly access the content. However, it is equally possible to perform QR code scanning from a computer or laptop.

Unlike mobile gadgets running iOS or Android, Windows devices lack a native system tool for reading QR codes. This means that even if your Windows device has a built-in or external (web) camera, it does not guarantee quick or automatic access to the QR code’s contents.

#1. Built-in support via a browser

Although Windows does not include a special tool to scan QR codes via camera, you can use the Microsoft Edge browser. Since version 87, Edge features a built-in option to read QR codes directly from web pages. Simply click the camera icon in the address bar and follow the instructions to scan the code.

Another built-in tool capable of reading QR codes is the standard Camera app. Naturally, it is less convenient since a user needs to manually find the right angle to capture the QR code image clearly. But if necessary, you can rely on this option. To use it, click the 'Start' button, navigate to 'All apps' line and select the 'Camera' option.

#2. Third-party software

Similar to app stores on smartphones and tablets, Windows users can install dedicated software for scanning QR codes on Windows computers and laptops. Visit the official Microsoft Store to find a variety of reliable applications.

Any scanner of your choice will do for opening QR codes on Windows. Popular programs include QR Code and Barcode Scanner (allows opening codes through the camera or from an image), QR Scanner (supports reading both QR codes and barcodes), and One Scan QR Code (supports multiple code formats like Code 39, 1D Code, etc.).

#3. Reading QR codes from images

One of the easiest ways to open a QR code on Windows is by using an image file. If you save the QR code image on your computer or laptop, you can easily view its content even without installing third-party software.

To do this, use the Google Lens feature integrated into Google Chrome. This tool supports multiple features, including reading QR codes from images. Simply launch the Google Chrome browser, click the Google Lens icon, and upload the QR code image to decode it.

#4. Alternative ways to scan QR codes

Suppose you do not have a camera, do not want to use a browser, or prefer not to install any software on your Windows device. In that case, you can still open QR codes on Windows using these convenient alternatives:

  • via a smartphone. The fastest way is to use your mobile device. Launch the phone’s camera app and point it at the Windows device’s screen displaying the QR code. This instantly opens the encrypted link or file on your smartphone.
  • via an online decoder. To scan QR codes without a camera, use any online service that allows you to upload an image and recognize the content. Look for websites with a clear interface and support for various content types. Many of these services are free or conditionally free (there is advertising);
  • via a browser extension. You can install special extensions for browsers like Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox. These add-ons enable you to scan QR codes directly on web pages, which is helpful when you want to decode codes while browsing.

As you can see, you have many easy ways to open a QR code on Windows. Although it is much easier to do this on Android and iOS mobile devices, this feature is also available for free to users of computers and laptops!
